Studio Naga Annual Auction & Dinner at Studio Naga in Oakland, CA 4:30pm-7:30pm Studio Naga, a self-defense training studio in the East Bay, will be hosting their annual silent auction and delicious Indonesian dinner. Ultra Gypsy will be performing, and there will be martial artists and Monkey Chanters as well! There will also be a cash bar to help grease the wheels of the silent bidding. The event is sponsored by the Tulen Foundation, a non-profit organization which sponsors free self-defense training for kids in need. All proceeds from the dinner and auction will go directly to empowering local youth -- you can help! Dia de los Muertos is an annual Meso-American holiday dedicated to our ancestors and loved ones now gone. We celebrate the Day of the Dead by creating sacred space with art installations, performances and a walking procession to contemplate our existence, mortality and a celebration of life. The mausoleum will contain four columbarium altars created by four different communities in San Francisco: The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Sunny Harker and her Leonard R. Flynn School - 5th Grade Class, Tenderloin Health Services, Mission District Artist & Performers. This is a FREE community event. Briana has been falsely accused of political crimes that carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 35 years. She is fighting these charges but desperately needs the support of her community. In addition to Ultra Gypsy's Jill Parker and Rose Harden, the bill includes Belly Dance Superstars Zoe and Mardi Love, Bellygroove's Frederique, The Nekyia's Kristina Canizares, mesmerizing Mira Betz, and Miriam Peretz. In between performances, there will be raffles for tantalizing treats that include rare private lessons with various performers and other goodies. Tickets are $20 and include admission to the afterparty 201 Broadway (off 880) in Oakland, CA Click here for more information Tuesday, August 8, 2006 World Fusion at Ashkenaz at Ashkenaz in Berkeley, CA Doors open at 7:00pm The evening opens with a complimentary dance lesson by Ultra Gypsy's own Rose to get everyone in motion. Then two new bands make their Ashkenaz debuts in an exciting show of eclectic, highly danceable music. Brazuca Brown combines the percussion and rhythms of Brazilian music with the post-tropicalia musings and “fusings” of today’s DJ culture. The result is a groovy sambalectric flavor powered by the high-energy drumming that electrifies the dance floor. Next, Southwest Nomadic has been known to perform Indian classical music, downtempo jazz sets, drum-n-bass and Cuban music, West-African rhythms and even some blues and rock. Their performance will offer the elements found on Southwest Nomadic’s just-released first CD, “Lumination” – flamenco-tinged reggae, trip-hop, rock, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban drumming, and Middle Eastern percussion. The Fire Arts Arena comes alive with fire stilters, flaming hoola hoopers, lightning from Tesla coils and eruptions of fire.
